How to Get XP

Complete Matches and Story Chapters
The official Progression & Customization Overview says players earn XP by completing matches and playing singleplayer story mode. That wording supports both multiplayer and solo progression, but it does not publish an XP-per-minute comparison between them.
Avoid leaving a match early solely because your Civilian died. The multiplayer overview says defeated players can continue supporting the team and may return as a Sheriff's Deputy or Dr. Loomis.
Complete Passive, Progressive and Singleplayer Challenges
The progression overview says Passive Challenges are tracked automatically across Killer and Civilian categories. Progressive Challenges are tied to specific Civilians, Michael skins and weapon types, with objectives completed in succession. Singleplayer chapters also include optional challenges with their own unlocks.
Read each current objective before choosing a mode or character. The official article describes these challenge categories but is not a live list of every requirement or reward.
IllFonic's September 5 Early Access Hotfix 1 also fixed several challenge-tracking problems. Install available updates before assuming a completed objective has failed permanently.

Completing matches supplies Perk Points used with the Perk Card system. The official article describes cards and progression, but not a permanent best build for every role or patch.
Check the card text in your current version and choose effects that match the role you are learning. Save comparisons between individual cards for evidence-backed build guides rather than treating every unlock as equally valuable.
XP After a Civilian Dies
Steam players report that spectator minigames or timed prompts can award XP after death. The official sources confirm continued participation and match-completion XP, but do not document the spectator reward amount or a fixed list of minigames.
