How to Unlock Characters

Earn Profile XP in completed multiplayer matches or Story Mode to unlock additional Standard Civilians. Richard and Alexis require Digital Deluxe access. Civilian-level starting items and Story cosmetics are separate rewards, so check the locked character's own requirement before grinding or buying an edition.

Roster and Unlock Reference

The official legacy-character announcement identifies ten Standard Civilians plus Richard and Alexis for Digital Deluxe. It does not supply a complete level table.

This table deliberately leaves unsupported numbers out. Earlier launch-week summaries on this site treated a full unlock sequence as community-tested without adequate first-hand support; that claim has been narrowed.

How to Check Your Next Unlock

Open the locked character's entry and compare its requirement with your Profile level, not only the level of the Civilian you have been playing. Record the requirement shown on your account before choosing a grind.

The official progression overview distinguishes account-wide Profile progress from per-Civilian progress, alongside Killer and Weapon levels. Completing matches and playing Story award XP. See how to get XP for the existing activity guide.

If you want Annie, Bob, or Lynda, do not assume a story scene involving them is the roster unlock condition. Players discussing locked legacy characters point to overall-account leveling rather than simply completing the story.

Lynda and Starting Items

A Steam player report describes reaching level 25 for Lynda, then returning to level 22 after restarting. That supports a reported unlock milestone and a separate lost-progress symptom; it is not official documentation.

Players comparing loadouts describe Pocket Knife access through Lynda's Civilian Level 10, and a Repair Kit unlock through Laurie's Civilian Level 15. Those are starting-item milestones, not the Profile levels at which those characters first become available.

Practical order: unlock the character, level the relevant Civilian, then inspect the starting-item selector on the loadout you want to use. Do not confuse owning a perk with unlocking an inventory item.

Laurie and Edition Confusion

The official preorder page calls the Final Girl bonus advance access to a Laurie cosmetic. That wording alone does not establish the base character's unlock level.

Players comparing accounts report Laurie being immediately available on some entitled accounts and locked on others. The discussion includes an approximate late-level claim, not a sufficiently precise verified milestone. This guide therefore does not turn it into an exact level requirement or promise that game sharing transfers the bonus.

Check the purchase receipt and add-on entitlement when an edition character is missing. Do not buy another copy solely because a cosmetic and a base character have been conflated in a guide.

Prestige, Cosmetics, and Missing Progress

Prestige becomes available at the maximum of a progression category, but the available official overview does not document a complete reset/retention matrix. Read the current confirmation before committing; do not assume previously unlocked characters or points are retained based on another game's prestige system.

Patch 1.0.2 reenables Prestige Challenges and addresses progression-related blockers. If the level itself rolls back, capture before/after levels and the match result. If the level remains correct but selection is locked, capture the character's requirement and entitlement instead. See challenge troubleshooting.

Police and Dr. Loomis are reinforcement roles, not ordinary initial roster unlocks. Use how to respawn as police for that route.
